A Few Notes on the Look(s) of Standard Schnauzers:

Color in Standard Schnauzers:

Standard Schnauzers come in both Pepper & Salt and Black. The essence of a Standard Schnauzer is the same, regardless of color. We believe Standard Schnauzers look wonderful in both Pepper & Salt and Black. Chimera is, therefore, proud to have both Black and Pepper & Salt Schnauzers.

Ears in Standard Schnauzers:

Standard Schnauzers can be found with both cropped or natural ears. The cropped ear is the traditional schnauzer ear style and it is believed to have originated as a way to protect the schnauzers from rodent bites that might occur in their daily work as ratters in Germany.

The cropped ear is the most common ear style in North America today. In many other parts of the world, the cropped ear is no longer allowed and the natural ear is the standard. In the U.S. and Canada, we are fortunate to have the choice to show either cropped or natural-eared schnauzers in conformation competition. I am very happy to report that in the show rings of the U.S. there is a growing openness to accept schnauzers with either ear style.

Many people have strong preferences in ear style. Whether you prefer the cropped or natural ear, you should be able to find a reputable breeder to help you find the right schnauzer with the look you want.

At Chimera, we think Standard Schnauzers look great with both ear styles. We have both ear styles ourselves. While the looks are very different, the schnauzer personality is the same. The Standard Schnauzer is wonderful dog, no matter if his or her ears are up & pointy or perkily folded over.

Stay tuned for notes on grooming and also taping for both cropped and natural ears.
